Antioxidant - A molecule which prevents or slows down oxidation.

Oxidation
- A chemical reaction that transfers electrons from one molecule to another. Oxidation is a natural process in the body that causes cells to age and decay.

Free Radicals
- After oxidation occurs a molecule is left with unpaired electrons known as an open shell configuration. These unpaired electrons are highly reactive and damage cells as they steal electrons from other molecules to balance their electron pairs.

The body can cope with some free radicals but an overload has been linked to many types of health problems from premature aging to diseases like cancer, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s Disease, rheumatoid arthritis, cataracts and many others.

Antioxidants to the rescue
- So how do antioxidants help you? They are the scavengers for those free radicals and neutralize them before they damage your cells. They provide the body with some serious defense against oxidation, a natural process in the body that causes cells to age and decay.

Also, they play a part in preventing the development of diseases like cancer, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s Disease, rheumatoid arthritis, cataracts and many others.

Here is an balance oxygen molecule with its 8 electron pairs.

This shows an oxygen molecule that oxidation caused the loss on one of its electrons turning it into a reactive free radical.

This shows an antioxidant supplying the oxygen free radical atom with an electron converting back to a balanced oxygen atom.

Free radicals are like stress they wear away at our health and vitality. In fact stress has been shown to increase free radicals along with other factors like smoking, pollution and aging. While stress is just part of life we can minimize its effects by adding antioxidants to our daily diet.

Adding chocolate to the formula not only makes it tasty but adds the health benefits of dark cocoa which has been shown to have antioxidant properties itself.

Ingredients:

Here is a description of each of the herbs in Herbal Chocolate Anti Oxidant which along with our high potency manufacturing process makes it the premier antioxidant formula. These 4 berries and seeds are the highest rated antioxidant herbs available.

Acai Berries
The Acai palm tree grows as high as 50 to 80 feet (15 to 25 meters). The edible Acai fruit is dark purple in color when it is ripe and has a large seed inside. Acai trees grow along major rivers in Northern Brazil, especially on lowland flood plains. Locals in the Amazon region often drink Acai juice made from ripe fruits. The Acai fruit is highly perishable and must be processed within 24 hours after harvest.

Nutrients & Applications:
Acai is known to have very high antioxidant properties. During a recent in vitro test the well known antioxidant phenols and anthocyanin chemicals were extracted from the fruit. Acai has the ability to support healthy and normal cellular tissue growth. The ORAC value of Acai is one of the highest in the world.

In Brazil, Acai is primarily being used as an astringent and blood cleanser. The dark purple color of the fruit is due to the polyphenolic compounds. The compound anthocyanin is responsible for creating red to purple colors in fruits like blackberries, raspberries and grapes. Foods and fruits, which contain high levels of anthocyanin are known to be potent antioxidants and are being used widely in anti-aging and to support healthy and normal cellular tissue growth

Blueberries
Antioxidants are thought to help protect the body against the damaging effects of free radicals and the chronic diseases associated with the aging process. Fresh fruits, including blueberries, and vegetables contain many of these naturally occurring antioxidants such as Vitamins C and E.  Blueberries contain 14 mg of Vitamin C and 0.8 mg Vitamin E per 1 cup of blueberries.  In addition, blueberries contain anthocyanins and phenolics that can also act as antioxidants.  Based on data from the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (Boston, MA), blueberries are among the fruits with the highest antioxidant activity.  Using a test called ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), researchers have shown that a serving of fresh blueberries provides more antioxidant activity than many other fresh fruits and vegetables. Blueberries have also shown to not only halt the ageing process but actually reverse it! Experiments have also indicated that eating Blueberries improves short term memory loss and improves balance and co-ordination.

Mangosteen Berries
Mangosteen
(Garcinia mangostana) is a tropical fruit found in eastern tropical islands such as Thailand. The Thais refer to mangosteen as the "queen of fruits." Mangosteen contains Xanthones, which are a specialized family of antioxidants. Antioxidants fight free radical damage. Mangosteen has much research behind it, more than many other health supplements. According to medical research, Xanthones have anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-parasitic properties as well as their fabulous antioxidant effects.

Grape Seeds
Grape seed extract is a natural plant substance that has a concentrated source of oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC). These anti-oxidants help protect cells from free radical damage and also promotes healthy circulation. Grape Seed Extract is rich in polyphenols, a compound that's high in antioxidants. Studies have shown OPC to be more powerful antioxidants than vitamin C, E, and beta-carotene. Before Grape seed extract was discovered, the best sources of antioxidants came from vitamin C, E, and beta-carotene; however, these sources were not powerful enough to fight the free radicals and are also excreted by the body within a short time of ingestion. Grape seed extract, on the other hand, has been shown to remain in the body for as long as 3 full days, and is 20 times more potent than vitamin C, and 50 times more stronger than Vitamin E.

Cocoa (chocolate beans)
A studies have found that a cup of hot cocoa is rich in powerful antioxidants.

Previous studies have also shown that cocoa can reduce the effects of ageing and may be richer in antioxidants than better known "healthy" drinks like tea and red wine.

Just over a year ago, researchers in France reported that a glass of red wine a day may cut a man's chances of having a second heart attack by half. In 1998, a study of more than 8,000 Americans found chocolate, which is made from cocoa, may even extend life. They are all rich in polyphenols, chemicals that have an antioxidant effect on the body. This means they can "mop up" free radicals - charged particles, produced by the body, which can damage cells.

Even though scientists recently found that chocolate isn't addictive, our melt-in-your-mouth friend scored big points in another study. British scientists observed couples while they ate squares of dark chocolate and while they kissed passionately. Guess what fellas: We lost! Women's heart rates rose 20 percent more and their bodies released 4 times the endorphins when they ate the cacao-rich chocolate. It's not a total loss though. At least you know those Valentine chocolates are well worth the money. If you really want to get technical, the women's version of "chocolate Viagra" used in the study was 65 percent cacao dark chocolate the same percentage we use in our Chocolate Passions.
